With Friday upon us I decided I wanted to post some fun facts about Boulder. Some well known and not so well known facts about the town I call home.
- Baseline Road is a significant east-west route to both Boulderites & cartographers, for it marks the 40th parallel on world maps.
- The Flatiron Mountains got their name by pioneer women who said they looked like flat, metal irons used to iron their clothes.
- Boulder’s Third Flatiron, which towers 1,400 feet high — a few hundred feet higher than the Empire State Building — has been climbed by people without using their hands, on roller skates, naked, and in 8 minutes (by separate climbers).
- Fourteen NASA astronauts are graduates of the University of Colorado.
- In the past, Chautauqua Meadow has served as a cattle pasture, golf course, backdrop for the “Mork & Mindy” television show and a ski area with rope tow, all before it was protected as a natural grassland.
- The University of Colorado at Boulder, started in 1877 with two teachers and forty-four students
Have a great weekend. Hope you can catch a glimpse of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge tomorrow!
